Calories are strange things. Everyone says the word — it’s repeated with almost tedious regularity on TV and throughout the media — but few know what a calorie actually is. In actual fact a calorie is the amount of food energy that is available through the ingestation of the food. A food calories is actually a thousand ‘proper’ calories.
But ‘energy’ sounds good, doesn’t it? Don’t I want more, rather than less calories? In actual fact you need the right amount of calories. This is why a calorie controlled diet doesn’t need to — really, it shouldn’t otherwise you’d be ill — reduce the calorie intake too far; it just needs to be at the right amount. Too many calories, you see, and the body has a surplus. If this happens then the excess energy is stored as fat. Bad news.
If you’re looking for weight loss then your diet should contain slightly fewer calories than you’re using throughout the day: this way your body needs to break down the fat on your body to maintain your energy levels.
Food supplements like Acai contain very few calories but many nutrients and (as is the case with Acai) lots of antioxidants, which means you get more goodness for fewer calories. It’s a no-brainer, really!
